2006-07-06 - By the sea
I can still taste the salt of the sea
drifting on the autumn wind
and feel the cool mist against my skin
as the tide reached out to meet our bare feet.
Your eyes, grey and limitless
cast downward as we walked without speaking
the sounds of nature echoing around us
filling the void created by what we weren't saying.
We both knew; instinctively knew it
long before anything was said aloud
that instinct bonded us, made us better
made us want to protect one another.
There were no words; nothing was adequate
to speak would have ruined the moment
but the air was electric
with promises unspoken and plans yet unmade.
We drew together against the wind
enjoying the chill we huddled together
our hands warm as we clasped them
and clung closer together.
He smiled at me and his eyes told me everything
I had no questions then, no doubts
he placed a gentle hand on me
reaching out to the innocence sleeping inside.
He couldn't feel the movement, yet I'm sure he sensed it
a tiny hand reaching out to his own
so close yet another universe away
a bond created in love that would eclipse lifetimes.
We turned away together; wet from the spray
and chilled by the wind, afraid but uplifted
a million possibilities alive within us
we ran along the sand for the pure uninhibited joy of it.
To us the world had never been more beautiful.
